There are at least 4 popular airports surronding London, Heathrow (West London), Gatwick (South of London) , Luton (North of London) and Standsted(Northeast of London). Heathrow is the most popular, easiest into the center city and as a result, often the more expensive choice.
When arriving at Heathrow, with your destination being the City, take the Heathrow Express train at Terminal 3 or 4 to Paddington Station. Fares for the Heathrow Express are £ 14.00 one way or £ 26 round trip(or "return" as they say in the UK). The Gatwick Express train will get you to Victoria Station in about 30 minutes. The Stansted sky train takes about 45 minutes to Liverpool Street or Tottenham Hale.
